A relativistic mixing-layer model for jets in low-luminosity radio galaxies

چکیده
We present an analytical model for jets in Fanaroff & Riley Class I (FR I) radio galaxies, in which an initially laminar, relativistic flow is surrounded by a shear layer. We apply the appropriate conservation laws to constrain the jet parameters, starting the model where the radio emission is observed to brighten abruptly. We assume that the laminar flow fills the jet there and that pressure balance with the surroundings is maintained from that point outwards. Entrainment continuously injects new material into the jet and forms a shear layer, which contains material from both the environment and the laminar core. The shear layer expands rapidly with distance until finally the core disappears, and all of the material is mixed into the shear layer. Beyond this point, the shear layer expands in a cone and decelerates smoothly. We apply our model to the well-observed FR I source 3C31 and show that there is a self-consistent solution. We derive the jet power, together with the variations of mass flux and and entrainment rate with distance from the nucleus. The predicted variation of bulk velocity with distance in the outer parts of the jets is in good agreement with model fits to VLA observations. Our prediction for the shape of the laminar core can be tested with higher-resolution imaging.

The Lorentz factor distribution and luminosity function of relativistic jets in AGNs
The observed apparent velocities and luminosities of the relativistic jets in AGNs are significantly different from their intrinsic values due to strong special relativistic effects. We adopt the maximum likelihood method to determine simultaneously the intrinsic luminosity function and the Lorentz factor distribution of a sample of AGNs. The values of the best estimated parameters are consiste...
متن کاملA Search for Molecular Gas in Low Luminosity Radio Galaxies
We discuss CO spectral line data of a volume-limited sample of 23 nearby (z < 0.03) low luminosity radio galaxies, selected from the B2 catalogue. Most of such objects (16/23) have HST imaging. Our aim is to establish the distribution of molecular gas masses in low lumi-nosity radio galaxies, in comparison with other radio source samples, confirm the suggestion that the CO is in ordered rotatio...
متن کاملRadio Sources in Low - Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei . IV . Radio Luminosity Function , Importance of Jet Power , and Radio Properties of the Complete Palomar Sample
We present the completed results of a high resolution radio imaging survey of all (∼200) low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) and AGNs in the Palomar Spectroscopic Sample of all (∼488) bright northern galaxies. The high incidences of pc-scale radio nuclei, with implied brightness temperatures ∼ 10 7 K, and subparsec jets argue for accreting black holes in ∼50% of all LINERs and low-lu...
متن کاملPhoton breeding mechanism in relativistic jets: astrophysical implications
Photon breeding in relativistic jets involves multiplication of high-energy photons propagating from the jet to the external environment and back with the conversion into electron-positron pairs. The exponential growth of the energy density of these photons is a super-critical process powered by the bulk energy of the jet. The efficient deceleration of the jet outer layers creates a structured ...
متن کاملThe power of jets: New clues from radio circular polarization and X-rays
Jets are ubiquitous in accreting black holes. Often ignored, they may be a major contributor to the emitted spectral energy distribution for sub-Eddington black holes. For example, recent observations of radio-to-X-ray correlations and broad band spectra of X-ray binaries in the low/hard state can be explained by a significant synchrotron contribution from jets also to their IR-to-X-ray spectru...
